In a titration, the test substance reacts quantitatively with a reagent, or titrant, to a solution of known concentration. Many compounds, both organic and inorganic, are either acids or bases. Solutions of these substances may be quantitatively titrated with a standardized solution of a strong base or a strong acid respectively. Titration end points can be detected either by means of an indicator affording a visual indication of the titration progress, or by following the change in pH utilizing a suitable electrode system and potentiometric recording instrument.
